Just turn up
A 1940s detached chalet bungalow and large garden adapted for sustainable living. Relatively early solar hot water and PV panels have now been in place for eight years, and the house has poly-bead cavity wall insulation and sheep's wool in the attic. Heating is by south-facing solar conservatory fitted with an automatic hot-air circulation system. This provides most heating from March to October, supplemented by a 7kW wood stove in the winter, fuelled with logs or pallets.
Only the garden will be open this year, and we hope - weather permitting - to include train rides and teas. The long garden includes free-range poultry, three wildlife ponds and a circular miniature railway, equipped to carry awkward or heavy loads, from compost to paving slabs, plus of course, passengers! The trains and signals are mostly solar electrically-powered.
No permanent car, but electric bicycles and bike trailers are used for most local journeys under ten miles, with rail, bus or borrowed/hired car for longer journeys. Jane and David made a video with Ali Cameron and Pete West of their ecohome. It can be viewed here
