Just turn up

Olly and Kerry have grown vegetables and apples, and kept cattle and goats on 20 acres at Fivepenny Farm since 2003. After gaining permanent planning permission in 2010, they decided to build a new eco house. As far as possible they have used local materials with low embodied energy, and their home is off-grid.

The house is constructed with a larch timber frame, infilled with compressed straw bales which serve as excellent insulation. The outside walls are rendered with lime plaster and larch cladding in exposed areas; internal walls are filled with straw and lime
covered with lime plaster. The roof and floors are insulated with Thermofloc, loose cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper combined with a mineral fire retardant. A wood-burning range heats the water, and a wood-burning stove provides all the heat that is needed in the house.

The house is not connected to the grid. Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels (2.4kw) and a small wind turbine (1kw) charge up lead-acid batteries (2000ah) with a backup generator for very occasional use. Plans are in hand to build a south-facing conservatory to gain further passive heating. All windows are double glazed with a large gap for extra insulation.
